Coburg wurde 1056 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Die Stadt mit ihren 41.000 Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern liegt im Norden des Bundeslandes Bayern an der Grenze zu Thüringen. Die kreisfreie Stadt befindet sich im Regierungsbezirk Oberfranken.

In Coburg gibt es zwei jüdische Friedhöfe. Der allgemeine Jüdische Friedhof ist der Friedhof Coburg Am Glockenberg. Daneben gibt es einen zweiten Friedhof, den [[Coburg-Familienfriedhof Simon|Familienfriedhof Simon]].


Der jüdische Friedhof liegt ca. 1km südöstlich vom Stadtzentrum Coburgs (Marktplatz). Laut Quellen wurde er 1873 begründet und von 1874 bis 1988 belegt. Der älteste lesbare Stein erinnert an den 1874 verstorbenen Louis Levi Benari. Der jüngste lesbare Stein wurde für den 1959 verstorbenen Martin Futter gesetzt.


Die Lesbarkeit der Grabsteine variiert mit deren Alter und Verwitterungsgrad, aber auch mit ihrem Material. Wie in Oberfranken üblich, wurde bis ins 20. Jahrhundert vor allem der regional verfügbare Sandstein für die Grabsteine verwendet. Heute sind 221 Steine auf dem Friedhof zu finden. Nur zwei der Grabsteine sind kaum lesbar, die übrigen gut oder teilweise. Fünf Grabsteine sind nicht erhalten und zwei Grabsteine stehen nachweislich nicht an ihrem ursprünglichen Platz (siehe Hinweise zur Tabelle unten).
 
Der Friedhof wurde überwiegend chronologisch belegt. Die dort Bestatteten stammten fast alle aus Coburg.

Für Einführungstext Besonderheiten: Mehrfachgräber bzw. Erinnerungsorte an mehrere Menschen.
Eine Besonderheit des Jüdischen Friedhofs Coburg am Glockenberg ist, dass dort 13 Gedenksteine bzw. Grabsteine mit Gedenkinschrift für ein oder mehrere Personen zu finden sind. Stellenweise handelt es sich um Steine mit Inschrift für dort bestattete Personen oder aber in Erinnerung an Menschen, die dort nicht bestattet worden sind. Der jüngste Erinnerungsstein wurde in Gedenken an den 1997 verstorbenen Harry Nomburg gesetzt.


Um Grab 45 mehrfach 1. Zeile "Grabmal".
Auch lässt sich als Charakteristikum des Friedhofs herausstellen, dass in Coburg eine recht hohe Zahl von insgesamt 37 Mehrfachgräbern eingerichtet wurden. Bei 23 dieser Steine können mehr als eine Nummer aus dem Sterberegister bzw. weitere im Register nicht eingetragene Namen zugeordnet werden. Bei 14 Steinen können eine im Sterberegister eingetragene Nummer sowie ein oder mehrere nicht eingetragene Namen zugeordnet werden.


Als weitere Besonderheit ist zu nennen, dass bei acht Grabsteinen (043, 044, 046, 047, 048, 053, 068, 074) in der ersten Zeile der hebräischen Inschrift das Wort „Grabmal eines“ (מצבת) zu lesen ist. Alle acht Inschriften erinnern an männliche Verstorbene.


Auf dem südlichen, jüngeren Teil des Friedhofs sind die Vorderseiten (das sind die dem Grab zugewandten Seiten) und in seltenen Fällen auch die Rückseiten (das sind die dem Grab abgewandten Seiten) mit Inschriften versehen.


Auf dem nördlichen, älteren Teil des Friedhofs befindet sich die hebräische Inschrift überwiegend auf der Vorder- und der deutschsprachige Text auf der Rückseite. In einigen Fällen sind die Vorderseiten ohne Inschrift. Die Besonderheit dieses Friedhofsteils liegt darin, dass die Rückseite die umfangreich gestaltete Schauseite darstellt, vermutlich weil sie dem Fußweg zugewandt ist.

Die Nummerierung der Tabelle (Spalte 1 "Grabstein-Nummer (07/2025), bzw. die Nummern "cogl-xxx") entspricht der Nummerierung wie sie in der Umzeichnung (07/2025) dargestellt wird.


Die Umzeichnung (07/2025) beruht auf verschiedenen überlieferten Friedhofsplänen, dem Sterberegister des jüdischen Friedhofs Coburg: Am Glockenberg sowie anderen historischen Dokumenten und genealogischer Forschung. Außerdem wurde die aktuelle Lage der Grab- und Gedenksteine auf dem Friedhof berücksichtigt.


Der Friedhof wurde außerdem vom Bayerischen Landesamt für Denkmalpflege vermessen und die vorhanden Steine mit Nummern versehen. Diese werden in Spalte 2 der Tabelle („LfD-Nummer“ bzw. die Nummern "cb1-xxxx") der im Wiki hauptsächlich verwendeten Nummerierung zugeordnet. Es lässt sich feststellen, dass in der untenstehenden Tabelle fünf Grabstellen keine vom Bayerischen Landesamt für Denkmalpflege vergebenen Nummern haben. Dies betrifft die fünf Grabstellen (d.i. cogl-115, cogl-133, cogl-135, cogl-158 und cogl-217), bei denen keine Grabsteine erhalten sind, für die aber eine Nummer im Sterberegister bzw. im historischen Friedhofsplan vergeben wurde.


Zwei Steine stehen nicht an ihrem ursprünglichen Platz: Ein Stein (cogl-077) ist erhalten, er ist allerdings nicht befestigt und lehnt an einem Fundament im Gebüsch unweit seines ursprünglichen Standorts. Er hat keine vom Bayerischen Landesamt für Denkmalpflege vergebene Nummer. Ein weiterer Stein (cogl-106) steht ebenfalls nicht an seinem ursprünglichen Platz. Er steht heute an der Stelle, an der ursprünglich der Stein cogl-077 stand, er ehemalige Standort von cogl-106 ist heute leer.


Für die Statistik: 19 Grabsteine (von denen wir Fotos haben, SfM habe ich nicht nachgezählt), haben eine leere Vorderseite. (inklusive cogl-063-071 (Grabstein geostet, aber mutmaßlich am Fußende); exklusive Gräber, die nicht geostet sind (cogl-112-181 u. cogl-154) und des WWI Steins).
Wiederum wurden fünf vom Landesamt verzeichnete Steine im MediaWiki nicht erfasst:

1) cb1-0014 ist ein liegender Stein bei den Kindergräbern, der kein Grabstein zu sein scheint.


Grabsteine mit Inschriften für dort Bestattete und in Erinnerung an Menschen, die dort nicht bestattet sind.  
2) cb1-0127 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-170.  


37 Mehrfachgräber: Davon 23 Steine denen mehr als eine Nummer aus dem Sterberegister zugeordnet werden kann (+ teilweise weitere uneingetragene Namen) und 14 Steine mit nur einer eingetragenen Nummer im Sterberegister und einem oder mehreren uneingetragenen Namen. (JW 09/2025)
3) cb1-128 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-167.  


Nummer des Landesamts für Denkmalschutz: 5 Grabstellen haben keine Nummer, weil kein Grabstein erhalten ist, nur die Nummer im Sterberegister/historischen Plan (cogl-115, cogl-133, cogl-135, cogl-158 und cogl-217), cogl-077 ist ein Sonderfall, hier ist der Stein erhalten, er steht jedoch nicht an seinem ursprünglichen Platz und ist nicht befestigt, sondern lehnt an einem Fundament im Gebüsch, vermutlich hat ihn das Landesamt darum nicht vermessen. Außerdem gibt es 5 LfD-Nummern, die keinem Stein aus unserer Nummerierung entsprechen: cb1-0014 ist ein liegender Stein bei den Kindergräbern, der kein Grabstein zu sein scheint, cb1-0127 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-170, cb1-128 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-167, cb1-0129 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-161 und cb1-0030 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-163-169.

Coburg wurde 1056 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Die Stadt mit ihren 41.000 Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern liegt im Norden des Bundeslandes Bayern an der Grenze zu Thüringen. Die kreisfreie Stadt befindet sich im Regierungsbezirk Oberfranken.

Jüdischer Friedhof Coburg: Am Glockenberg

In Coburg gibt es zwei jüdische Friedhöfe. Der allgemeine Jüdische Friedhof ist der Friedhof Coburg Am Glockenberg. Daneben gibt es einen zweiten Friedhof, den Familienfriedhof Simon.

Der jüdische Friedhof liegt ca. 1km südöstlich vom Stadtzentrum Coburgs (Marktplatz). Laut Quellen wurde er 1873 begründet und von 1874 bis 1988 belegt. Der älteste lesbare Stein erinnert an den 1874 verstorbenen Louis Levi Benari. Der jüngste lesbare Stein wurde für den 1959 verstorbenen Martin Futter gesetzt.

Die Lesbarkeit der Grabsteine variiert mit deren Alter und Verwitterungsgrad, aber auch mit ihrem Material. Wie in Oberfranken üblich, wurde bis ins 20. Jahrhundert vor allem der regional verfügbare Sandstein für die Grabsteine verwendet. Heute sind 221 Steine auf dem Friedhof zu finden. Nur zwei der Grabsteine sind kaum lesbar, die übrigen gut oder teilweise. Fünf Grabsteine sind nicht erhalten und zwei Grabsteine stehen nachweislich nicht an ihrem ursprünglichen Platz (siehe Hinweise zur Tabelle unten).

Der Friedhof wurde überwiegend chronologisch belegt. Die dort Bestatteten stammten fast alle aus Coburg.

Besonderheiten

Eine Besonderheit des Jüdischen Friedhofs Coburg am Glockenberg ist, dass dort 13 Gedenksteine bzw. Grabsteine mit Gedenkinschrift für ein oder mehrere Personen zu finden sind. Stellenweise handelt es sich um Steine mit Inschrift für dort bestattete Personen oder aber in Erinnerung an Menschen, die dort nicht bestattet worden sind. Der jüngste Erinnerungsstein wurde in Gedenken an den 1997 verstorbenen Harry Nomburg gesetzt.

Auch lässt sich als Charakteristikum des Friedhofs herausstellen, dass in Coburg eine recht hohe Zahl von insgesamt 37 Mehrfachgräbern eingerichtet wurden. Bei 23 dieser Steine können mehr als eine Nummer aus dem Sterberegister bzw. weitere im Register nicht eingetragene Namen zugeordnet werden. Bei 14 Steinen können eine im Sterberegister eingetragene Nummer sowie ein oder mehrere nicht eingetragene Namen zugeordnet werden.

Als weitere Besonderheit ist zu nennen, dass bei acht Grabsteinen (043, 044, 046, 047, 048, 053, 068, 074) in der ersten Zeile der hebräischen Inschrift das Wort „Grabmal eines“ (מצבת) zu lesen ist. Alle acht Inschriften erinnern an männliche Verstorbene.

Auf dem südlichen, jüngeren Teil des Friedhofs sind die Vorderseiten (das sind die dem Grab zugewandten Seiten) und in seltenen Fällen auch die Rückseiten (das sind die dem Grab abgewandten Seiten) mit Inschriften versehen.

Auf dem nördlichen, älteren Teil des Friedhofs befindet sich die hebräische Inschrift überwiegend auf der Vorder- und der deutschsprachige Text auf der Rückseite. In einigen Fällen sind die Vorderseiten ohne Inschrift. Die Besonderheit dieses Friedhofsteils liegt darin, dass die Rückseite die umfangreich gestaltete Schauseite darstellt, vermutlich weil sie dem Fußweg zugewandt ist.


Gaby Schuller hat sich besonders für die Sichtbarmachung, Erforschung und Betreuung des Friedhofs verdient gemacht. Für ihre stringente ehrenamtliche Arbeit seit vielen Jahren gilt ihr herzlicher Dank.

Anmerkung zur folgenden Tabelle

Die Nummerierung der Tabelle (Spalte 1 "Grabstein-Nummer (07/2025), bzw. die Nummern "cogl-xxx") entspricht der Nummerierung wie sie in der Umzeichnung (07/2025) dargestellt wird.

Die Umzeichnung (07/2025) beruht auf verschiedenen überlieferten Friedhofsplänen, dem Sterberegister des jüdischen Friedhofs Coburg: Am Glockenberg sowie anderen historischen Dokumenten und genealogischer Forschung. Außerdem wurde die aktuelle Lage der Grab- und Gedenksteine auf dem Friedhof berücksichtigt.

Der Friedhof wurde außerdem vom Bayerischen Landesamt für Denkmalpflege vermessen und die vorhanden Steine mit Nummern versehen. Diese werden in Spalte 2 der Tabelle („LfD-Nummer“ bzw. die Nummern "cb1-xxxx") der im Wiki hauptsächlich verwendeten Nummerierung zugeordnet. Es lässt sich feststellen, dass in der untenstehenden Tabelle fünf Grabstellen keine vom Bayerischen Landesamt für Denkmalpflege vergebenen Nummern haben. Dies betrifft die fünf Grabstellen (d.i. cogl-115, cogl-133, cogl-135, cogl-158 und cogl-217), bei denen keine Grabsteine erhalten sind, für die aber eine Nummer im Sterberegister bzw. im historischen Friedhofsplan vergeben wurde.

Zwei Steine stehen nicht an ihrem ursprünglichen Platz: Ein Stein (cogl-077) ist erhalten, er ist allerdings nicht befestigt und lehnt an einem Fundament im Gebüsch unweit seines ursprünglichen Standorts. Er hat keine vom Bayerischen Landesamt für Denkmalpflege vergebene Nummer. Ein weiterer Stein (cogl-106) steht ebenfalls nicht an seinem ursprünglichen Platz. Er steht heute an der Stelle, an der ursprünglich der Stein cogl-077 stand, er ehemalige Standort von cogl-106 ist heute leer.

Wiederum wurden fünf vom Landesamt verzeichnete Steine im MediaWiki nicht erfasst:

1) cb1-0014 ist ein liegender Stein bei den Kindergräbern, der kein Grabstein zu sein scheint.

2) cb1-0127 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-170.

3) cb1-128 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-167.

4) cb1-0129 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-162.

5) cb1-0030 ist die Fußleiste von cogl-163-169.
